“I’m back in the saddle again…”
I might have heard the solitary whistle of a lone cowboy warbling over the plains when I read today’s prompt. August heat and a smoky sky hang over my town, a hazy reminder of distant fires and days before my time.
The wild west isn’t so wild anymore yet where I live there is still plenty of desert untouched by irrigation. Dusty and parched scrub lands reach their truest browns and yellows about this time of year.
Last weekend I picnicked on the Columbia Reach in an area so beautiful that when I crested the hill on the approach the view simply took my breath away. Water inlets were dazzling in the summer sun. It was the rolling desert beyond that invited the eye. Miles and miles of arid glory met the sky in a grand continuum. You can only live that moment once.
